OpenAI and Broadcom unveiled Jalapeño on 26 June — OpenAI's first custom-designed inference chip. Engineering samples were personally delivered to CEO Sam Altman and President Greg Brockman by Broadcom CEO Hock Tan. Early testing shows approximately 50 per cent lower inference cost per token compared to current-generation NVIDIA GPUs, with deployment at scale planned through 2029.
The chip was designed in just nine months, a timeline that reflects the urgency of reducing OpenAI's infrastructure costs. With ChatGPT serving over 900 million weekly active users and the GPT-5.6 series entering preview, OpenAI's inference compute bill is among the largest recurring expenses in the technology industry. A 50 per cent cost reduction at scale would fundamentally alter the company's path to profitability.
Separately, Anthropic formally accused Alibaba of running a massive distillation attack against Claude between April and June 2026. The campaign allegedly involved 28.8 million exchanges through approximately 25,000 fraudulent accounts, specifically targeting Claude's agentic reasoning capabilities. The attack dwarfs a previous February campaign involving 16 million exchanges, suggesting escalating efforts by Chinese technology companies to replicate frontier AI capabilities through systematic model distillation.
The Google DeepMind talent exodus continued to accelerate. Four senior researchers have departed in six days: Noam Shazeer and John Jumper to OpenAI and Anthropic respectively, with Jonas Adler and Alexander Pritzel also moving to Anthropic. Together they represent the AlphaFold team's core leadership shifting to rival labs. Alphabet stock fell 7.2 per cent intraday as investors expressed concern about Google's AI competitiveness.
For context engineers, OpenAI's custom silicon signals that frontier AI companies are following the path of Google, Amazon, and Apple in designing chips optimised for their specific workloads. The Alibaba accusation underscores the growing threat of model distillation attacks against commercial AI systems.
